Times Online Mobile Crosswords
Getting started: instructions for
popular handsets and a special tip for Vodafone subscribers
The Times Crosswords use different programmes that work with most types of
handset. The most popular is called J2ME (Mobile Java). Most phones that play
games use J2ME. So does the Blackberry. For other smartphones and PDAs we
use a different programme which has been specially built to deliver our
crosswords to mobile. A few basic or older phones may not play games at all so
it's wise to check your handset manual.
Downloading the Times Crosswords
This a simple process and, just like
anything slightly mobile technical, the more familiar you are with your phone
the easier it is
The general tip is take your time. It's only a matter of pushing
buttons - the right buttons of course! If you do get stuck - drop an e-mail
to customerservice@roundpoint.com
and we’ll send you the exact details of how to download to your specific model
of phone. We've also included links to the support and manual pages for popular
manufacturers.
Getting your new service started
First - are you "data connected"'
Nearly all phones sold today are data connected as they leave the shop. If not
just call your provider. Fortunately data connections are often free or are
priced reasonably [see (1) at the bottom of these FAQs]. You only
pay for the actual data transferred rather than the time of connection.
Downloading and enjoying the Times Crosswords each day takes very little data -
about 15K which is less than half a megabyte over a whole month.
TIP: Once you know you're connected you're ready to go. The operators
describe the data connection from your handset in a number of ways - it may
simply say Internet or WAP, or it may appear as the operator'so wn branded
portal, like Orange World, Vodafone Live, T Zones or 02 Active. These portals
use the data connection to and from your phone - so if you can click on and see
what's in the portal then you know you're connected. All of these operators
allow you to access data from any source, such as the Times Crosswords, but 3
does not, so if you are a 3 subscriber, we are sorry, you will only be able to
play 3's own entertainment selection.
On many phones you will have a shortcut icon such as "Services" "Web",
"Internet" or "WAP". There's usually an explanation in the user manual.
We've provided links to the relevant section of the most popular manufacturers'
websites so you can read the manual online for you handset.
How to get the Times Crossword on your phone'
This section is about how to activate your service which you requested by
sending a text message (SMS). Usually this message is short like "get Timescw".
It is sent to a short code (a special short number rather than a longer
telephone number)
To subscribe to this service via SMS, simply text "get timescw" to
88010. This will purchase you a repeating monthly subscription to the
service at a cost of £4.50 per month. You can cancel this service at any time by
texting "stop timescw" to 88010.
You will receive a reply SMS which will contain your individual web address
(URL) for access to the service. This URL is important. It has been assigned to
you only and it's your personal gateway for the period of your
subscription. This link allows you to download the programme that drives
the crossword and to download your daily crosswords for as long as you subscribe
- and we hope that's for years to come.
When you activate your web address (see below) your handset will connect to
one of our computers where your service is ready for you to download.
Because it's important to get the right version for your handset we use a
"smart" handshake to start the connection before your download begins. The
"smart" .handshake automatically recognises which version is right for your
handset before it begins the download procedure.
Save your individual web address (URL) carefully or even write it down. If
your phone ever crashes it may lose everything in the memory and it's good to
know you can easily re-join your service if this happens.
Make sure you have the SMS message with the web address clearly displayed on
your phone, then read the instructions below relating to your handset
